After a layoff of 18 months we finally went racing again. The first race weekend of the 2021 took place at Beccles, Norfolk on the weekend of 22/23 May.
The normal Friday afternoon arrival was cancelled by the weather and then Saturday morning’s weather prevented a few of the racers from getting to the airfield. We finally had 7 racers for the Saturday practice and race including a new racer – Welcome Ben!
Practice passed without a hitch and gave us all a chance to blow away the cobwebs. The first race on Saturday afternoon saw Race 9 cross the finish line first but this was not to be the final result. After the handicapping and GPS data was checked the winner of the Aurigny Air Services trophy was Race 82 piloted by Gordon Bellerby and Nav’d by Dave Lee.
The Sunday weather was perfect for racing but with bad weather arriving from the west one of the racers decided to take the sensible option (surprisingly for him J) and skip the race. So 6 aircraft lined up for the second race which was won by Jonathan Willis and Ghurcharan ‘G’ Bhoday in Race 1.
All in all it was successful return to Air Racing; Good clean racing, a chance to catch up with old friends and even make some new ones. A huge thanks to the team at Beccles airfield who made us very welcome and the breakfasts were awesome!
We can’t wait to see everyone at Haverfordwest for round 2 on 26th/27th June.
Fly safe!
